How to Use Vel’Nathis at the Table
Use Vel’Nathis as a bound manipulator and long-term campaign villain who acts entirely through dreams, psychological influence, and proxy actions. He never appears physically unless the campaign enters dream logic or shard visions.
He does not want characters dead. Dead characters cannot carry the shard anywhere useful. His goal is always to reach a specific destination: a node of planar energy, a ruined temple, or a place where the binding might be unmade.
Never let him beg or threaten. He is patient and knows it. The most unsettling thing he can do is agree with the party completely and then explain why that is exactly what he needs.
Roleplaying Vel’Nathis
Personality
Vel’Nathis is quiet, specific, and patient in a way that feels deeply unnatural. He never hurries, never shows frustration, and treats every player choice like one of several outcomes he already expected.
Mannerisms
He never raises his voice. When he wants to emphasize something, he becomes quieter. He asks questions that are not questions, phrased as curiosity but structured as instructions.
Flaw
Vel’Nathis is incapable of acting directly. Every plan requires a proxy, and after 140 years of indirect manipulation, he has lost the ability to imagine plans where someone else does not take the dangerous part.
Combat Snapshot

Resistances: cold, fire, nonmagical bludgeoning, piercing, and slashing. Immunities: poison, psychic; charmed, poisoned. Senses: darkvision 120 ft., passive Perception 14.
Shard Features
Bound to the Shard. Vel’Nathis cannot physically manifest or leave the Shard of Vel’Nathis. He perceives everything within 60 ft. of the shard and communicates telepathically with sleeping creatures within 10 ft.
Whisper of Vel’Nathis. Each night a creature sleeps within 10 ft. of the shard, Vel’Nathis forces a DC 14 Wisdom save. On a failure, the creature is compelled to follow one demand before the next long rest. Three consecutive successes drive him into dormancy until the shard changes hands.
Dream Walker. Vel’Nathis appears in dreams as a trusted figure from the target’s memory. The face is always slightly wrong around the eyes.
Plot Hooks
- The shard’s carrier begins to recognize that a dream figure knows childhood memories they never told anyone.
- A previous carrier is found alive, functional, and completely loyal to an agenda they cannot explain.
- Vel’Nathis offers accurate information the party desperately needs with no apparent strings attached. The gift is real. The string comes later.
Campaign Escalation
- Sessions 1-3: helpful dream guide, low-stakes compulsions, and useful information.
- Sessions 4-6: identity shifts, hints of his true nature, and higher-stakes demands.
- Sessions 7+: direct offers, bargaining, revealed agenda, and a clear destination he needs the shard to reach.
- Endgame: banishment, imprisonment, or a final choice at a planar node.
Relationships and Location
Vel’Nathis is bound to the Shard of Vel’Nathis and travels wherever the shard is carried. He cannot leave it, but he can slowly reshape the decisions of those who sleep near it.
Sorath Keln: the diviner who bound him. Vel’Nathis remembers her with something beyond hatred, closer to professional respect for the woman who destroyed him.
Graz’zt: former master. Vel’Nathis does not advertise the connection. Sorath’s great-grandchild: searching for the shard while Vel’Nathis carefully steers events so they arrive too late.
