What Does the Shadowstep Jerkin Do?
The Shadowstep Jerkin functions as standard leather armor, granting an Armor Class of 12 + your Dexterity modifier. Its magic lies not in brute protection, but in giving the wearer a split-second edge when things go wrong.
Slip Between Shadows is a once-per-long-rest reaction ability. When a creature you can see misses you with a melee attack, you can immediately move up to 5 feet to an unoccupied space — and that movement does not provoke an opportunity attack from the creature that swung and missed. It’s a small repositioning tool that can change the geometry of a fight: stepping out of flanking position, ducking behind cover, or simply putting distance between you and a dangerous foe at exactly the right moment.
Quiet Hem is a passive once-per-long-rest benefit. While wearing the jerkin, you gain advantage on one Dexterity (Stealth) check made in dim light or darkness. It’s subtle and situational, but for a rogue or scout, advantage on a critical infiltration roll can mean the difference between a clean extraction and a very loud night.
Drawback: Afterimage Lag
The Shadowstep Jerkin’s evasion comes with a cost. After using Slip Between Shadows, your shadow takes a heartbeat to catch up to your new position — a ghostly afterimage lingers in the space you just left.
Until the end of your next turn, you have disadvantage on the next Wisdom (Perception) check you make that relies on sight. You moved faster than your eyes could follow, and the world blurs momentarily in your wake.
Lore: The Thief Who Left No Witness
Shadowstep Jerkin is said to have belonged to Cael Voss, a thief who became famous not for what he stole, but for how little anyone remembered seeing him. He claimed he never outran guards. He simply stepped where their eyes had already stopped looking. The armor was tailored from soft night-black leather and lined with thread pulled from a curtain in the royal theater he robbed on his final job. Some say the jerkin still carries the timing of that last escape: one breath, one missed blade, one step into the place the enemy forgot to watch.
GM Notes
Designed for level 1–4 characters. Its AC equals studded leather armor. The movement is only 5 feet, requires an enemy to miss first, and uses the wearer’s reaction, keeping it tactical but restrained.
Identification: DC 12 Arcana or Investigation. Aura Strength: Faint illusion magic.

Unidentified Name: Dark Tailored Leather Jacket
A dark, well-tailored leather jacket with soft seams and a flexible cut. It looks expensive, but not obviously magical.
