How to Use Serafein at the Table
Use Serafein as a skirmisher-ambusher boss who opens with negotiation before violence. She wants coin, not bodies, and she respects competence more than courage, titles, or moral speeches.
Her first encounter should feel like a business transaction with weapons nearby, not a mugging. She presents a professional choice: pay the toll or explain why the party thinks they can refuse.
If the party proves useful, she may offer a short-term deal involving escort, information, road access, or leverage against Kragg Eisenfall. If they attack unprovoked, she withdraws and remembers.
Roleplaying Serafein
Personality
Serafein is composed in the way experienced people in dangerous professions tend to be. She does not raise her voice, does not threaten unnecessarily, and does not bluff when she does not intend to follow through.
Mannerisms
She rubs the inside of her left wrist across her jaw when calculating odds, always positions herself with a clear exit line, and slows down when she is lying.
Ideals, Bonds, and Flaws
Ideal: Competence is the only virtue that actually matters. Everyone else can have their codes and principles. She has results.
Bond: Torvel Grau is the only person in the band she trusts without reservation. She does not say this. He knows anyway.
Flaw: She built the band on a lie, the Blood Oath, and cannot dismantle it without destroying the thing it holds together.
Combat Snapshot
Medium humanoid (half-elf), chaotic neutral. AC 15 (studded leather), HP 38 (5d10+10), Speed 30 ft.
Saving Throws: DEX +7, STR +4. Skills: Stealth +7, Perception +5, Survival +5, Intimidation +4, Athletics +4.
Senses: darkvision 60 ft., passive Perception 15. Languages: Common, Elvish, Thieves’ Cant. Challenge: 5 (1,800 XP).
Gloomstalker Features
Dread Ambusher. On her first turn in combat, Serafein’s speed increases by 10 ft. If she attacks during the first round, she can make one additional weapon attack, and that extra attack deals +3 damage on a hit.
Umbral Sight. Serafein is invisible to creatures that rely on darkvision to see her while both are in darkness. She cannot be tracked by nonmagical means.
Extra Attack. Serafein attacks twice whenever she takes the Attack action.
Two-Weapon Fighting. When she attacks with a light weapon in her off-hand, she adds her Dexterity modifier to the damage roll.
Plot Hooks
- A merchant consortium hires the party to identify who is behind the road tax. They have the carved stone token but no face. By the time they find Serafein, she already knows they are coming.
- Kragg Eisenfall’s men abduct Jakk, the youngest Reaver. Serafein approaches the party because she cannot be certain they work for Kragg. She pays.
- Torvel Grau disappears overnight. No struggle, no note. Serafein is shaken, and the letter in the strongbox is missing too.
Encounter Ideas
- Ashroad Toll: at dusk, Serafein offers the party a professional choice: pay, explain, or refuse with steel.
- Köhlerhütte Meeting: after the party proves competence, Serafein meets them on her own terms and weighs them as assets rather than targets.
- Kragg Pressure: she needs outside leverage before Kragg’s men turn the Reavers into casualties.
- False Oath Exposure: someone learns the Blood Oath is theatre and threatens the only thing holding the band together.
Relationships and Location
Serafein leads the Ashroad Reavers from the Köhlerhütte camp near the Ashwood tree line and scouts the Ashroad at dusk. She is captain because she is consistent, not because she is warm.
Torvel Grau: closest ally and the only person who knows the Blood Oath is a lie. She trusts him completely and has never said so.
Kess: useful, sharp, and slightly unpredictable. Brund Falkenauge: her most reliable enforcer. Jakk: young, reckless, and personally recruited. Kragg Eisenfall: rival and genuine threat.
