What Does the Scroll of Temporary Door Do?
As an action, you press the Scroll of Temporary Door against a nonmagical wooden surface no more than 6 inches thick and at least 3 feet wide. A simple wooden door immediately appears in that surface — complete with a handle, functional hinges, and the ability to open, close, and lock from either side.
Small and Medium creatures can pass through the door freely. The door remains for 1 minute before vanishing entirely, leaving no hole or trace behind. Notably, it leaves no structural damage — the wooden surface is restored to its original state. The scroll is consumed on use, making this a single-use utility item best saved for the right moment.
The door has its own structural integrity and serves as legitimate cover. It can be used as an escape route, an improvised entry point, or even a makeshift barrier in a pinch. One important caveat: the hinge is slightly squeaky — and this, by all accounts, is simply part of the experience.
Drawback: Fussy About Surfaces
The Scroll of Temporary Door has firm opinions about where it will and will not work. It functions only on nonmagical wooden surfaces — stone walls, metal doors, brick arches, and magically reinforced structures are all firmly out of scope. The wooden surface must also be at least 3 feet wide to accommodate a proper frame.
Additionally, only Small or Medium creatures can use the temporary door. Large and larger creatures will find themselves politely but firmly excluded from this particular exit strategy. And, of course, the squeaky hinge remains non-negotiable.
GM Notes
Only works on wooden surfaces — keep track of dungeon materials. The size limit (Small/Medium only) means Large creatures like ogres and trolls cannot follow the party through, making this an effective split-party tool or escape mechanism. Excellent one-time escape item that rewards creative thinking.
Identification: No special DC required. Aura Strength: Faint conjuration magic.
