How to Use Rollo at the Table
Use Rollo as the first voice in a Reaver ambush. He speaks because waiting in silence makes him nervous, then says something slightly wrong. Serafein does not need to correct him; one look is enough to make him stop.
He is a low-threat combatant who becomes more useful after the fighting pauses. Rollo knows the Reavers’ routines and will share them if he believes cooperation gives him a safe exit.
His loyalty is practical rather than ideological. A credible offer can turn a disposable enemy into an anxious witness, reluctant guide, or source of mundane but valuable intelligence.
Roleplaying Rollo
Appearance
Rollo is stocky and average in almost every respect. He has a pale, ruddy complexion, tired grey eyes, thinning dirty-blonde hair, and a bulbous nose marked by a broken capillary.
Bearing
His worn padded jacket has already belonged to at least three other people. He carries a crossbow with the familiarity of someone who has used one, but would strongly prefer not to do so today.
Core Instinct
Rollo tries to look dangerous while quietly measuring every nearby escape route. Pressure makes him talk; credible safety makes him honest.
Combat Snapshot
Medium humanoid (human), chaotic neutral. AC 11 (padded jacket), HP 9 (2d8), Speed 30 ft.
Skills: Deception +2, Intimidation +2. Senses: passive Perception 10. Languages: Common. Challenge: 0 (0 XP).
Pack Tactics and Combat Behavior
Pack Tactics. Rollo has advantage on an attack roll against a creature if at least one of his allies is within 5 feet of that creature and is not incapacitated.
This is a group tactic rather than a sign of personal skill. Rollo is dangerous only while better Reavers hold the line for him.
He starts slightly behind the front with his light crossbow. If isolated, seriously wounded, or offered a clear escape, his priority shifts from winning to surviving.
Plot Hooks
- Rollo ruins the timing of an Ashroad ambush by speaking too soon, giving observant characters a moment to react.
- After surrendering, he offers a plain account of Reaver routines in exchange for protection and a head start.
- The party later discovers Rollo in another settlement, trying badly to pretend that he has never met them.
Encounter Ideas
- The Early Challenge: Rollo speaks before Serafein gives the signal and exposes the shape of the ambush.
- The Safe Exit: cornered and alone, he tests whether the party’s mercy is credible before naming names.
- The Ordinary Informant: Rollo cannot reveal grand secrets, but he knows watches, meal times, habits, routes, and who dislikes whom.
- The Weak Link: another Reaver realizes Rollo is about to defect and tries to silence him.
Faction and Location
Rollo serves as a Tier D body in the Ashroad Reavers. During an ambush, he usually stands slightly behind the front line, close enough to benefit from the pressure created by tougher allies.
He is not important enough to know every plan. What he does know is practical: daily routines, common routes, ambush habits, supplies, and the behavior of people above him.

Frequently Asked Questions
Who is Rollo in DnD 5e?
Rollo is a chaotic neutral human bandit and low-ranking member of the Ashroad Reavers, designed as a CR 0 NPC for ambushes, surrender scenes, and faction roleplay.
How should I use Rollo in an encounter?
Place him just behind stronger allies during a roadside ambush. Let his nervous speech disturb the Reavers’ timing, then make him receptive to surrender when the fight turns against him.
Will Rollo betray the Ashroad Reavers?
Yes, if he receives a compelling reason and believes he has a safe exit. His loyalty is based on pay and survival rather than ideology.
What challenge rating is Rollo?
Rollo is CR 0 with AC 11 and 9 hit points. He is intended as a low-threat rank-and-file combatant rather than a standalone boss.
Is Rollo Foundry VTT ready?
Not yet. He is assigned to the runeforgestudio-ashroad-reavers compendium, and this article includes a copy-ready statblock and token image link for manual setup.
