What Does Map Pin of Mild Panic Do?
The Map Pin of Mild Panic is a divination wondrous item that gives any map-carrying adventurer a small but meaningful edge in overland navigation. As an action, you place the pin on a map and name a destination. For the next hour, the pin trembles whenever the route you have marked passes through natural danger — a washed-out bridge, an unstable slope, a predator trail, or an unsafe river ford.
The pin communicates purely through vibration and a faint red glow. It cannot speak, point, or reason. It simply knows when the path ahead would put a traveller at physical risk from the land itself.
What it detects: Natural, environmental hazards within one hour of travel along the marked route.
What it does not detect: Intelligent ambushes, magical traps, or hazards that originate from creatures or spells rather than the terrain.
Drawback: The Anxious Pin
The pin panics at dramatic weather even when the road is safe.
Stormy weather, dramatic temperature drops, or other atmospheric disturbances can cause false positives. The pin cannot distinguish between a genuine flood risk and a bit of theatrical thunder. GMs may call for a DC 12 Wisdom check to interpret borderline trembling.
GM Notes
Only natural hazards — not intelligent ambushes or magical traps. Requires an actual map.
The pin is intentionally limited to physical terrain hazards. Weather-based false positives are a feature, not a bug — they keep players engaged even after they identify the item. Consider using the false-positive rule in sessions where you want to create tension on a route you know is actually safe.
Aura: Faint divination magic. No Identify DC is set — a successful DC 10 Arcana check or the identify spell reveals its properties.

Unidentified Name: Small Iron Pin
A small iron pin with a faintly glowing head. Vibrates slightly when pressed against any surface.
