What Does Helmet of the Sensible Duck Do?
The Helmet of the Sensible Duck is a common abjuration helmet with one job: when you’re about to take a beating from a dungeon hazard, it honks — and reduces the damage.
Mechanically, the helmet grants you a reaction that triggers automatically when you are struck by a bludgeoning hazard you can see — a falling object, a swinging log trap, or a low stone beam. When it activates, you reduce the incoming bludgeoning damage by 1d6. The helmet then emits a single, dignified quack. This ability recharges at dawn.
The key limitation is visibility: you must be able to see the hazard. If you’re blindfolded, in magical darkness, or the trap triggers from behind, the duck cannot help you. The duck sees what you see. The duck does what it can.
There are no attack rolls, no saving throws, and no spell slots involved. This is pure reactive mitigation for the chaotic, trap-laden corridors of Tier 1 dungeons.
Drawback: The Quack
The helmet quacks once when it saves you. Undignified.
Every time the helmet activates, it announces itself. In a stealth dungeon crawl, one poorly timed quack can alert every goblin on the floor. The duck is not sorry. The duck saved your life. These are the terms.
GM Notes
Only works on bludgeoning dungeon hazards (not weapon attacks). The quack can be hilarious at the table.
Identification: No identification required (Common rarity, no DC). Aura Strength: Faint abjuration magic.

Unidentified Name: Dented Iron Helmet
A well-worn iron helmet with a greenish tint. Water beads off it even in heavy rain.
