How to Use Leoric at the Table

Use Leoric as a comic but useful merchant NPC. He is not evil, but he is vain, dishonest about his background, and very good at making ordinary goods feel rare.

He can provide rare spices, rumors from wealthy households, merchant gossip, access to private culinary events, or a messy trade hook when one of his questionable shipments turns out to matter.

His haggling works best as Persuasion, Deception, or Insight contests, with the outcome shaped by whether the party enjoys the performance or sees through it.

Roleplaying Leoric

Personality

Leoric is warm, theatrical, flattering, and endlessly talkative. He sells stories as much as spices, and every conversation becomes a performance.

Mannerisms

He twists his pointed moustache while bargaining, waves scented spice samples under a customer’s nose, lowers his voice dramatically before invented travel stories, and taps his saffron ring when nervous.

Ideals, Bonds, and Flaws

Ideal: Presentation is half the truth. People do not only buy goods; they buy the feeling of owning something rare.

Bond: He is deeply attached to Bramwell’s Aromas, the small fortune he has built, and the public image that keeps his customers enchanted.

Flaw: He exaggerates constantly and lies reflexively when his status is questioned. His pride makes it hard to admit ignorance.

Merchant Tricks

Worldly Performance. Leoric has advantage on Charisma checks when telling stories about rare goods, distant markets, or exotic delicacies.

Aromatic Persuasion. Once per conversation, Leoric can use a carefully selected scent or spice sample to gain advantage on a Persuasion check involving food, luxury, or taste.

False Provenance. Leoric can convincingly invent histories for mundane goods, though a successful Insight or History check may reveal inconsistencies.

Plot Hooks

  1. A customer asks the party to verify whether Leoric’s rare spice shipment is genuine.
  2. A real foreign trader arrives and publicly challenges Leoric’s invented travel stories.
  3. Someone steals Leoric’s ledger, exposing wealthy customers and suspicious private orders.
  4. A spice blend accidentally contains a rare alchemical ingredient wanted by smugglers.
  5. Leoric hires the party to protect his reputation during a market festival.

Encounter Ideas

  1. Shop Bargaining: a social scene inside Bramwell’s Aromas turns into a contest of charm, lies, and taste.
  2. Market Festival: Leoric performs an exaggerated spice demonstration while rivals look for proof of fraud.
  3. Counterfeit Delicacies: the party investigates forged import seals and luxury foods with suspicious origins.
  4. Public Exposure: a rival merchant tries to expose Leoric in front of noble customers.
  5. Lost Shipment: Leoric asks the party to recover a shipment before anyone learns he does not know its origin.

Relationships and Location

Leoric runs Bramwell’s Aromas, a small spice and delicacy shop near a refined market street. His customers buy spices, stories, and the feeling of being worldly.

Wealthy Citizens: loyal customers who enjoy his stories. Restaurant Owners: regular buyers of his spice blends.

Real Foreign Traders: useful suppliers who know he has never traveled as far as he claims. Rikka Quickscarf: might notice inconsistent stories at The White Mouse. Joran Hollowquill: could expose gaps in his fabricated historical anecdotes.
