What Does the Fawnhide Buckler Do?
While wielding the Fawnhide Buckler, you gain the normal +2 shield bonus to AC—no more, no less. Its magic doesn’t boost your own defenses; it turns your shield outward, toward those around you.
Guardian of the Small is the shield’s core ability. Once per long rest, when a creature within 5 feet of you is hit by an attack, you may use your reaction to grant that creature 1d4 temporary hit points after the damage is resolved. It doesn’t prevent the hit—it cushions the blow, giving your ally a little more resilience to fight on. This is a subtle but meaningful act of battlefield protection, especially for frontliners standing next to squishier allies.
Forest’s Hush activates in natural outdoor terrain—forests, meadows, or natural wilderness. Once per long rest, while carrying the shield in such terrain, you have advantage on one Wisdom (Animal Handling) or Wisdom (Survival) check made to calm a frightened beast, find a safe path, or locate shelter. The shield whispers with the instincts of the fawn, guiding you where walls and torchlight can’t follow.
Drawback: Timid Heart
After using Guardian of the Small, you have disadvantage on the next Charisma (Intimidation) check you make before your next short or long rest. The shield’s magic softens your presence—in the moment of protecting another, you lose a little of your menace.
This is a narrative drawback as much as a mechanical one. A warrior who just stepped in front of an attack for a child doesn’t look terrifying; they look kind. The Fawnhide Buckler leans into that honesty.
Lore: The Young Forest Warden
Fawnhide Buckler belonged to a young forest warden who was never known for strength in battle. She was known for bringing lost children, wounded beasts, and frightened travelers safely through the old woods. When wolves circled her final caravan, she stood between the pack and a crying child with nothing but this small shield and a shaking hand. By dawn, the child lived, the wolves were gone, and the shield carried the quiet courage of a creature willing to tremble and still not move.
Its magic is gentle, protective, and almost shy.
GM Notes
Designed for level 1–3 characters. The shield does not grant any additional AC beyond the normal +2 shield bonus. Its magic is defensive and support-oriented, with no damage boost and a soft roleplay drawback.
Identification: DC 12 Arcana or Nature. Aura Strength: Faint abjuration magic.
