How to Use Corven at the Table

Use Corven as a competent, principled city watch ally who believes the system can still protect people when the right people stand inside it. He is polite, thorough, and hard to corrupt.

Corven is not an antagonist. He is a moral slow fuse. The longer the party works near Casper Vane, the more likely a collision with Corven becomes, and that collision should feel personal rather than procedural.

He works best in patrol checks, official investigations, witness protection scenes, and moments where the party has to decide how much truth a good man can survive.

Roleplaying Corven

Personality

Corven is calm, direct, and without a hidden agenda. He listens before he speaks. He is not naive, but he has chosen to believe in the watch anyway.

Mannerisms

He rubs the back of his neck when uncomfortable, uses short precise hand gestures from basic training, and rarely smiles. When he does, it is unguarded.

Ideals, Bonds, and Flaws

Ideal: The law is not perfect. But without it there are only the strong and the weak. I stand between them.

Bond: Casper Vane is his younger brother and the only family he has left. Corven would do almost anything to protect him.

Flaw: He suppresses evidence pointing toward Casper, asks the wrong questions, and stops as soon as he gets a reassuring answer.

Combat Snapshot

Medium humanoid (human), lawful good. AC 16 (chain mail), HP 45 (6d10+12), Speed 30 ft.

STR16 (+3)
DEX12 (+1)
CON14 (+2)
INT11 (+0)
WIS13 (+1)

Saving Throws: STR +5, CON +4. Skills: Athletics +5, Perception +3, Insight +5.

Senses: passive Perception 13. Languages: Common. Challenge: 2 (450 XP).

Watch Sergeant Features

Unshakeable Duty. Corven has advantage on saving throws against being frightened and charmed. Social manipulation attempts aimed at getting him to commit a rule violation have disadvantage.

Watchful Eye. Once per short rest, when Corven observes a creature within 30 ft. performing a deceptive action such as theft, concealed spellcasting, or smuggling, he may make an Insight check as a reaction with a +5 bonus, even if he appears distracted.

Plot Hooks

  1. The party meets Corven during a routine patrol check. He is polite, thorough, and mentions a younger brother who “keeps to his own path.”
  2. Lady Storme discreetly commissions the city watch to investigate rumors of a planned break-in, and the assignment finds its way to Corven.
  3. Corven seeks the party out quietly after hearing Casper’s name connected to something serious, but does not reveal who he is.

Dramatic Resolutions

  1. Corven gives Casper 24 hours to leave the city and looks the other way.
  2. He tries to talk Casper out of it himself, fails, and must decide whether to report him.
  3. He covers for Casper and destroys everything he has built his identity around.

Relationships and Location

Corven serves from the city watch post in the Market Quarter near Harbour Street. He lives in a small rented room two streets from his post and occasionally patrols the edge of the Market Quarter where The White Mouse is located.

Casper Vane: younger brother. Corven does not know what Casper actually does and actively suppresses the question. They meet roughly once a month for a meal and talk about everything except what matters.

The White Mouse: Corven knows the tavern by name but has no idea Casper drinks there.
