How to Use Casper at the Table
Use Casper as a heist catalyst, uneasy partner, clever target, or recurring underworld contact whose plans are just good enough to become dangerous. He is not a killer, and he avoids direct combat whenever possible.
The Storme vault break-in can enter the campaign from three angles: the party is hired to catch him before he acts, the party encounters him already inside the vault, or Casper approaches them directly because he needs a specific item from the vault that they also want.
Casper is still in the planning stage. He has an incomplete floor plan, knows two guards by name, and is waiting on a Silence scroll. What he lacks is the exact watch rotation, the hidden-passage location, and a secure place to stash the take.
Roleplaying Casper
Personality
Casper is charming in a quietly world-weary way. He is not cruel, vindictive, or ideological. He is pragmatic to the bone and likes people well enough as long as they do not get in his way.
Mannerisms
He leans slightly back when paying close attention, quietly repeats the last question before answering, and always has a coin in hand, walking it across his knuckles when idle.
Ideals, Bonds, and Flaws
Ideal: Nobody gets rich without shortchanging someone else. I stopped pretending otherwise. At least I’m honest about it.
Bond: His older brother serves in the city watch and knows nothing of Casper’s activities. Casper would never place him in direct danger.
Flaw: He systematically underestimates how well Lady Storme has secured her vault. His confidence shades into arrogance on that subject.
Combat Snapshot
Medium humanoid (human), chaotic neutral. AC 14 (leather armor), HP 22 (5d8), Speed 30 ft.
Saving Throws: DEX +6, INT +4. Skills: Acrobatics +6, Stealth +6, Sleight of Hand +6, Perception +3, Deception +4, Insight +3.
Senses: passive Perception 14. Languages: Common, Thieves’ Cant. Challenge: 2 (450 XP).
Arcane Trickster Features
Sneak Attack. Once per turn, Casper deals an extra 2d6 damage with a finesse or ranged weapon when he has advantage or an ally is within 5 ft. of the target and he does not have disadvantage.
Cunning Action. Casper can Dash, Disengage, or Hide as a bonus action. This is his primary combat tool.
Arcane Manipulation. Casper can cast Minor Illusion and invisible Mage Hand without components. Mage Hand can probe locks, move objects up to 10 lbs., and create distractions.
Evasion. On a successful Dexterity save against an area effect, Casper takes no damage. On a failure, he takes half damage.
Plot Hooks
- The party finds a half-finished floor plan of the Storme palace left behind in a tavern. It can be traced back.
- Lady Storme hears rumors about a planned break-in and commissions the party to identify the thief quietly, with no official record.
- Casper approaches the party himself. He has access to the vault, but there is a specific item inside that he cannot take without attracting attention, and the party wants it too.
Heist Setup
- What Casper Has: an incomplete floor plan, two guard names, attic-room hideouts, and a rough approach to the Storme estate.
- What Casper Needs: the watch rotation, the hidden-passage location, a Silence scroll, and a secure place to stash the take.
- What Can Go Wrong: Corven gets assigned to the case, Lady Storme knows more than expected, or the sewer map is a deliberate trap.
Relationships and Location
Casper rotates between three different attic rooms across the city and avoids building habits anyone can map too easily. He drinks at The White Mouse occasionally and knows the notice board.
Corven Vane: older brother in the city watch. Corven knows nothing of Casper’s activities, and Casper will avoid any plan that places him in direct danger.
The White Mouse: Casper has observed Thordin Ashveil and Fizzle Mosswick from a distance, filing them away as discreet independent operators and possible future contacts.
